Italian trio She’s Analog debuts on Auand Records with “What I Bring, What I Leave”. Their first album – available on vinyl (gatefold) and digital audio only, starting September 2020 – is conceived as a treasure chest to be emptied and refilled again.
Stefano Calderano (guitar, effects), Luca Sguera (rhodes, prophet) and Giovanni Iacovella (drums, live electronics) aim at rethinking the most traditional kind of small band, the trio, and they do so by subtracting. «The concept – they explain – is to create music collectively, by starting from a thinner and thinner idea, and to layer it with more and more radical improvisation.»
Formed in 2018, the band toured extensively and put together the repertoire they eventually recorded in Marchisielli studio in Foligno, Italy, in March 2019, with a little magic added by Dan Kinzelman.
«We like to think this album is a sort of package, a treasure chest – they say – with music inside. It’s the music created and explored in our live performances, fed by both our listeners’ and our breath. This music is somehow trapped in the grooves of this album.»
Track by track, the recording unveils the minimalist structure of Matrice Humaine; the ghost mood in Long Distance Runners; the music explorations in Revolution; some surprising math-rock in One Week – already included in a large ensemble rendition on Auanders’ “Text(us)” – and the gentleness in Song #4.
The cover image – a Manuela Naddeo’s statue wrapped in cellophane – also provides some hints: «We like to think this is our music’s first journey. One that carries what’s essential only, and gets rid of what is no longer needed».

Daring pursuits of slouching guitar riffs a la Stephen Malkmus, acid grids of electric piano, illegitimate daughters of the
most disillusioned free-rock minimalism, and drilling hyperkinetic drums. All wrapped up in our beloved song form.

Great record! I always love Bill McHenry and everyone here is completely killing. Eric Revis is truly great and it thrills me to hear (at least what I perceive as) some non jazz influences on some of these bass lines. Maybe a little Mick Karn in there on Baby Renfro? ejnachtrab
